an archive of all the I.B.R.I. Global Mailing List announcements (or as many as I've been able to gather...it's a work in progress...and progress is slooooooowwwwww...)

Date: June 21, 2003
Subject: R.I.P.

I've been neglecting my duties in regards to this list, though it's not hard to understand why I might procrastinate about the following statement.

It is with great sadness that we at I.B.R.I. acknowledge the passing of two fellow travelers, Ted Joans and Laurence Weisberg, both of whom died earlier this year.

Information on Ted Joans can be found at http://www.emptymirrorbooks.com/tedjoanslives.html

Unfortunately, little exists on the web in regards to Laurence Weisberg, but write to me and I'll be happy to pass along what information I have.

Subject: book launches

Two important book launches happening here in Toronto next week.

---

Beatriz Hausner's first book of poems has been published by Ekstasis Editions and will be launched on Monday June 9 at 8pm at Bar Italia, 582 College Street, Toronto (for information phone 416-926-8238)

The Wardrobe Mistress

Erotic, surrealist and musical, the poems of The Wardrobe Mistress invoke the notion of the wardrobe as a world where the keeper of clothes is the keeper of keys that will unlock every inner secret. Smart, funny and seductive, these poems entice and entrance …a bold new voice in Canadian poetry.

---

And Stuart Ross sends us this invite:

> Hi there, friends!
>
> After 25 years in the poetry racket, this is the big one for me: the launch of
> Hey, Crumbling Balcony! Poems New & Selected. I'm really hoping all my friends and
> colleagues can make it.
>
> ECW has gone all out on this one, and I really want it to fly. The book is 232 pages, hardcover,
> with a very cool dustjacket (see it at ecwpress.com or hunkamooga.com).
> Hey, Crumbling Balcony! contains about 30 new poems and 80
> poems from the past, plus a long autobiographical Afterword about how being a
> poet meant that I was always getting beat up as a kid. Oh, I talk about other
> stuff in there as well.
>
> Anyway, I'd *love* to see you there. Here are the details:
>
> ECW SPRING POETRY LAUNCH
>

>

>
> Please join me for this celebration of devoting my life to something in which
> I can't make a living! And bring your friends, and circulate this invitation
> to others who might be interested.
>
> Also, there will be launches in Ottawa and Kingston over the next couple of
> weeks. You can find details of those on my website, www.hunkamooga.com (and

Subject: automatic words/improvised music

Hi,

That's weird...it appears that I've agreed to do a "poetry reading"...what could I have possibly been thinking!?

------------------------

Poetry at Le Gourmand
152 Spadina Avenue, Toronto
Tuesday, May 20 at 7:30 pm

"Several Species Of Birds"
W.A.Davison and friends
an evening of improvised music and automatic words

The Birds are:
William Davison (unearthly crow) - vibrating objects and words
with Arnd Jurgensen (white noise condor) - guitar and disturbing devices and Watson Jennison (the cloud of feathers) - woodwinds and hypnotic gestures

"This carnival head is
too heavy
Unless you want to break
her neck
I spaced it hamways
always bumping
against the dummies in the
back room
The light's not working
you'll have to settle for
this cabbage"

(more examples of Davison's automatic writing can be found at http://members.rogers.com/recordism/WDWA.html)

2) Speaking of good shows...(also for those in the Toronto area) I highly recommend the Guy Maddin and the Royal Art Lodge exhibitions, both at the Power Plant until May 25/03. Amazing!

The Royal Art Lodge show, called "Ask the Dust", is actually on tour. After the Power Plant it will be heading to De Vleeshal in Middleburg, the Netherlands with further destinations to be announced.

Visit www.thepowerplant.org for more details.

--------------------------------------------------------------

3) Presumably if you're reading this, you have a computer and web access so there's no excuse for missing this exhibition because it's online! Daniel Hanequand informs us he's in a show called "The Severed Garden" in an online gallery called The Hammond Gallery. I've always enjoyed Daniel's work and some of the other work in the show is very good too! Pop over to http://www.theseveredgarden.hammondgallery.co.uk/ and have a look.

--------------------------------------------------------------

4) The current issue of Rampike magazine contains a two-page spread (photos and text) describing a recent performance by Songs of the New Erotics (that's me!) called "Tiny Gifts". Of course it's chock full of other interesting poetry, essays, visual art, etc. as well...as usual! It's available across Canada as well as in the United States, the U.K., Germany, France, the Netherlands, Japan, Italy, Switzerland, and Australia.

----------------------------------------------------------

5) Johannes Bergmark is performing in Athens, Greece next Thursday! He sent us the following information:

> Dear friends, collegues, contacts,
>
> here I forward a selected info about myself playing for the first time in
> Athens, Greece: yes it happens next thursday! You probably won't come but it

6) VBOR site updates:

- I've begun archiving these announcements on the website. You can now read past I.B.R.I. Global Mailing List announcements at http://members.rogers.com/recordism/MLArchive.html

- info on how to join the I.B.R.I. Global Mailing List has been added to the Com. Div. and "About VBOR" pages (can't believe I'm just getting around to doing this!). Of course, if you're reading this you're probably already on the list so who cares!

- new work added to the Dept. Of Recordist Objects (W.A.Davison - Drawings section) at http://members.rogers.com/recordism/DORO.html

- a poem by Beatriz Hausner has been added to the Dept. Of Recordist Word Art (http://members.rogers.com/recordism/DORWA.html)

- many new links added to the Communications Division (http://members.rogers.com/recordism/CD.html)

- the Disembraining Songs links page (http://members.rogers.com/dis.songs/DSLinks.html) has been updated

- minor tweaks and corrections here and there

- the Whats's New page (http://members.rogers.com/recordism/WhatsNew.html) details all recent site updates and the Site Map (http://members.rogers.com/recordism/SiteMap.html) has been updated too

I'm currently working on revamping the Songs of the New Erotics performance documents section (http://members.rogers.com/recordism/SOTNE.html), adding text descriptions for all the performances and more photos. It's going to take awhile though. I'll keep you posted.

I'm also working on a whole new site called "Carbon Cult" which will document the early years of Recordism, and other anti-social behavior, in Truro, Nova Scotia through the 80's. BIG project though, could be many, many months before anything sees the light of day.

--------------------------------------------------------

7) Finally, my nephew Chris Davison sent us this link (thanks Chris!). If you like your humor dark, absurd, and existential (and who doesn't?) check out these great flash animations:

http://www.hoogerbrugge.com/ml.html

---------------------------------------------------------

That's all for now (and I'm sure that's enough! Whew...my typing finger is tired!). Hope to see some of you Sunday evening at the Oasis!

Subject: irr.app.(ext.) performance!

I know I said I would be quiet for awhile but gosh darn it there are just so many exciting things going on right now! Like this...

***

> Dear Citizen,
>
> This message is to inform you that the first irr. app. (ext.) public
> performance will be taking place on March 22nd at the Temescal Arts Center
> in Oakland, California (511 48th street at Telegraph). Irr. app. (ext.) has
> maintained an excruciatingly marginal public presence for several years now,
> and this is the first attempt to display the full shame of its existence
> before a living audience. The performance will be a pointless combination of
> both visual and musical performance, location recordings culled from various
> locations in the U.S. and Ireland, arachnid baiting, object distribution and
> non-linear line dancing. Also featured are the voices (pre-recorded) of
> AnneAnneLoriAnne Chambers, Windy Chien, Diana Rogerson and Django Stapleton.
> The venue is fairly small, but it is still anticipated that almost nobody
> will show up. Witness a public debacle of breathtaking proportions all by
> yourself! $5 admission (just to cover expenses). In evidence will be: the
> audio-mixing and sandwich-making skills Richard Karl Faulhaber; the limber
> mouthparts and scorpion-wrangling talents of John Scharpen; the fancy
> footwork and all-consuming rage of Gregory Scharpen; and the gloomy,
> suffocating, hope-destroying presence of M. S. Waldron.
>
> ---------------------
>
> On a related note, on March 27th will be the opening of an exhibit of the
> artwork of M.S. Waldron (the first in over 10 years) by the estimable
> ensemble at Aquarius Records in San Francisco (1055 Valencia Street). The
> exhibit will feature enough work from across the last decade (and a few
> reproductions of pieces in overseas collections) to make you nearly gag with
> astonishment. Plus: nine recently-completed and never-before-seen objects of
> an embarrassingly three-dimensional nature will be dangled from tired walls
> for your heartless scrutiny. The exhibit should be running for a couple of
> months, or until everyone gets tired of having to look at it. Here is the
> press release:
>
> "Immolating Without Oxygen"
> a decade of unseen attempts by M.S. Waldron
>
> A selection of pieces generated over the last 10 years, almost none of which
> have been publicly displayed, and including nine created specifically for
> this exhibit. An infantile pre-occupation with particular forms and
> procedures throughout this period of time, and the increasing willingness to
> allow them to direct outcomes, may or may not be evident.
>
> "Most of the initial ideas appear spontaneously, and then are horribly
> disfigured by constant errors and miscalculations. Ultimately, the materials
> themselves determine the end result," expostulates M.W. without moving his
> lips. "I don't really understand it all that well."
>
> M.S. Waldron was born in Toronto at the donkey-end of 1969. Through no fault
> of his own he was relocated to California in 1980, and has been confused
> ever since. In addition to his attempts at visual work, he has an audio
> project unwisely named "irr. app. (ext.)" , with 8 records completed so far
> (almost none of which have been released) as well as past and ongoing
> collaborations with Nurse With Wound, Christoph Heemann, Stilluppsteypa and
> Sigtryggur Beg SIgmarsson. He is also a founding member of The Onieromantic
> Ambiguity Collective, a writing group active since 1998.

***

If you are in the Oakland/San Francisco area or can get there in the next week, you absolutely must go see both of these shows! Don't argue with me...you have to go. Just look at the poster Mr. Waldron has created for the show!! http://www.csua.berkeley.edu/~scharpen/IrrAppPerf2003.html

For further information on irr.app.(ext.) and the Oneiromantic Ambiguity Collective I recommend a visit to their website at http://www.csua.berkeley.edu/~scharpen/OAC.html

First off, many thanks to all who made it out on Tuesday evening to see/hear Steve Venright and myself at Le Gourmand. Excellent turnout and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves...almost as much as Steve and I ;-) Many thanks as well to Paul Bouissac for organizing the event!

If you have received this message (or even if you haven't, but have some comment on it), write me and let me know what you think. Obviously, Posada El Castillo is interested in drumming up some business but the idea of a "gathering of surrealists" does intrigue me and I wonder how serious they are and what exactly they have in mind, if anything. I will write to them directly soon but I thought I would put this network to work first and see if anyone else has some inside information.

That's all for now. My apologies for the slew of announcements recently, hope I haven't made a nuisance of myself. I expect to fall silent again for a month or so. In the meantime, write to me regarding the above (or anything else).

Subject: various announcements

Hello again!

Several more announcements from I.B.R.I.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

1) Steve Venright and I will be doing a collaborative performance this Tuesday evening. Here are the details:

Poetry @ Le Gourmand
152 Spadina Ave., Toronto
Tuesday, February 25, 8pm

"Reading With Sound Slopes"

Steve Venright* - The Black Domain and other poems
William A. Davison** - sound slopes

"There is one more frame of film I exposed in this sequence. Moments after the camera captured my moth-embellished pose, I rigged the device for another shot. My breathing was hindered more and more by the overlay of wings. There was little hope now of clearing my eyelids without harming the delicate creatures that roosted there. Sightless and covered in moths, like a somnambulant entomologist overcome by his specimens, I groped my way toward the camera. Only with difficulty did I perform the necessary prehensile gesture to set the timer in motion. Retreating softly into focus range, barely breathing, I awaited the click of the shutter. In that interval, those few mechanical seconds between action and reaction, I left the Black Domain. I am standing in my living room, clothed as I was upon entering the forest, my eyes closed as if in prayer.

Last slide, please."

* www.torporvigil.com

FYI, the "sound slopes" mentioned will be an improvised collage of ambient, electronically manipulated sounds, mostly found on the premises of Le Gourmand (a small cafe/shop on Spadina, just south of Queen)

-------------------------------------------------------------

2) A couple of recent Canadian publications have featured Recordist work.

The Winter 2002 issue of Geist magazine (No. 47) includes a photo essay by Scott MacKay which documents the Sept. 2002 Songs of the New Erotics performance entitled "The Lovers".

Issue # 74 of Artfocus magazine features a wonderful article by Ray Ellenwood entitled "Canada's Forgotten Surrealists". The article discusses the much-overlooked history of surrealism in Canada, siting many examples including the work of Jean Benoit and Mimi Parent, Ludwig Zeller and Susana Wald, and, with a nod to current manifestations, the International Bureau of Recordist Investigation.

Both of these magazines are currently on the stands (though perhaps not for much longer!).

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

3) I have a short piece of Recordist Word Art called "The Apple Hat" in the online publication Muse Apprentice Guild available at http://www.muse-apprentice-guild.com/

Lots of other good stuff there, do check it out!

More Recordist Word Art is of course available at the Dept. Of Recordist Word Art, http://members.rogers.com/recordism/DORWA.html

---------------------------------------------------------

4) Site updates to the Virtual Bureau Of Recordism include the following:

Included a copy of the Breton Petition that was circulating a while ago in our Theoretical Division. Go to http://members.rogers.com/recordism/NoForcedSale.html to see it. Since uploading it, I actually discovered that Zazie's site has a better version of it. Do pay her a visit at http://www.zazie.at/

Finally got around to adding a copy of the Globe and Mail article about I.B.R.I., including our many additional notes and corrections, to the Theoretical Division, http://members.rogers.com/recordism/Globearticle.html

Added documentation of the "Tiny Gifts" performance to the Songs of the New Erotics Page, http://members.rogers.com/recordism/SOTNE.html

New images added to the Recordist Scrapbook, http://members.rogers.com/w.a.davison/Scrapbook.html

Numerous new links added to the Communications Division, http://members.rogers.com/recordism/CD.html

What's New and Site Map pages have been updated to reflect all new additions to the site, http://members.rogers.com/recordism/WhatsNew.html and http://members.rogers.com/recordism/SiteMap.html

-----------------------------------------------------

That's about it for now, hope to see some of you at Le Gourmand this coming Tuesday!

Drop me a line if you feel so inclined, I'd love to hear from you!

I have a bunch of stuff to pass along but will have to do it in installments. Only have time tonight to quickly forward this one item regarding an upcoming performance.

For those of you in the Toronto area I will be playing at the Ambient Ping this Tuesday evening. Here are the details (courtesy of the Ping guys):

This Tuesday February 11th - Tomasz Krakowiak
with Aidan Baker and William Davison

Percussionist Tomasz Krakowiak has fashioned a distinctive
sonic vocabulary within a framework of conventional and
unconventional instrumentation, including standard drums
(never in an orthodox alignment), found objects and various
homemade constructions. He has performed with many
experimental/improv ensembles & is currently part of two duos:
with turntablist Mike Hansen and with soundsinger Paul Dutton.
Tomasz will be joined at this show by ambient/ experimental
guitarist Aidan Baker (from improv trio ARC) & experimental
musician William Davison (from improv sextet Six Heads).

Upon leaving, you slammed the door and several small, brown tufts of fur fell out of my pipe.

I've also been working on the website recently. Here's a list of updates and additions:

- I.B.R.I.'s Business Division now has a page. And if the spirit of giving is still lingering with you after the holidays, why not visit the Business Division webpage and find out how you can make a donation to I.B.R.I. (and maybe receive a free gift in return!)

- the site now has a "What's New" page with quick links to recent additions

- new material added to Recordist Scrapbook (I.B.R.I. Archives)

- Documentia section (I.B.R.I. Archives) has been updated (Documentia 2002 completed. Documentia 2003 begun)

- new definitions added to Recordist Lexicon (Dept. Of Recordist Games)

- additions to Communications Division links page

- minor corrections and tweaks (reworked some of the gif animations to make them smaller, faster loading, and smoother running)

That's all for now. Hope to see some of you this Sunday evening!
